Symbols
A necessary and interesting toolset if using creative accents, symbols, or displaying mathematical formulas.
When to use
Symbols are characters that are not standard alphabet, but would be placed within the text of a document. Use a symbol to put formal marks of ownership on a title, or a currency symbol beside a number.
Instructions
To begin, place the insertion point in your text where you want the symbol to appear.
- Click Insert
and click Symbol
- Choose from the gallery or click
- Observe the two tabs at the top of the dialogue box:
- Scroll through the symbols to find the one you like, or click the “Special Characters” tab and find one that is more common:
- Notice the shortcut key list and make a note if you find one you will use often. It is more efficient to use a shortcut key than to search for a symbol in the extensive gallery.
- 00:05 Hello in this lesson, I wanna teach you about symbols like copyright symbols,
- 00:08 trademark symbols, or currency symbols.
- 00:11 So no this first line of the exercise file, I'm asking you let's put
- 00:15 the copyright symbol right here, on the right hand side of this figure.
- 00:22 If you click on your insert ribbon,
- 00:24 way over on the right hand side is an option that says symbol.
- 00:27 Notice, folks, right above it, is equations, in case you're a math person,
- 00:30 you need equations.
- 00:32 But right here we're going to work on symbols.
- 00:34 When I hit the drop down arrow, it gives me the most currently used one, and
- 00:38 right there, of course, is the C for copyright, just that easy.
- 00:42 All right now the next one,
- 00:43 the next line is, let's do the trademark symbol for Coca-Cola.
- 00:47 So I'll click right behind Coca-Cola, go back up to the symbols, and yes,
- 00:51 the trademark is right here.
- 00:54 But I want to take you a step further and take you into more symbols.
- 00:57 When you click on the more symbols button right here you can see I've got two tabs.
- 01:02 One on the front says symbols, one in the back says special characters.
- 01:06 When you activate special characters,
- 01:08 these are the ones that are most commonly sought out for.
- 01:11 So I have the copyright symbol.
- 01:13 The registered, the trademark, sections, paragraphs and other symbols as well.
- 01:18 You can scroll up and down to see these.
- 01:20 But it's your choice.
- 01:22 I can just go ahead and click trademark right there and
- 01:24 notice on the right, it says Alt+ Ctrl+ t.
- 01:28 So it's teaching you the shortcut to
- 01:31 put the trademark symbol in there in case you use it often.
- 01:34 Right, so I'll go in and click Insert.
- 01:37 And it should show up, let me close this, there it is, the TM.
- 01:40 I'll hit space bar a couple times, and
- 01:43 I'm just gonna hit Alt+Ctrl+T, and sure enough it pops in right there.
- 01:49 A little different font, of course, but that's just fine.
- 01:52 All right, let's add the Japanese yen on the third line.
- 01:54 So again, I click on symbols and
- 01:57 it happens to be right here so I can click and activate it.
- 02:01 Or, yes, I could go a little step further to more symbols and
- 02:05 I could just search through this set of symbols right here on normal text and
- 02:10 hopefully find it on this list.
- 02:12 Or, I can go to any other font style, and
- 02:16 see if it would be on one of these lists as well.
- 02:19 So you can click through all kinds of font styles to find what ever symbol you want,
- 02:25 I happen to know if I typed wingdings here.
- 02:28 Wingdings, all kinds of symbols, look at them all here.
- 02:31 You could even put a smiley face if you want.
- 02:33 So just so you know, that you have access to all these fonts
- 02:38 with all these symbols in there definitely well worth knowing, well worth using.
- 02:43 It's up to you to explore those areas.
- 02:45 If you're ever trying to tell someone which symbol to use and and
- 02:50 they're over the phone or something and they don't know which one
- 02:54 you're talking about, every symbol has a corresponding character code, all right?
- 02:58 So I could tell them, well, go to Wingdings and type character 56 and
- 03:03 they would get the cute little mouse on their screen.
- 03:06 So there's all kinds of ways to identify which one you want to use.
- 03:11 You just have to know how to read these boxes, all right?
- 03:15 So there you go.
- 03:16 Thank you so much, and please use symbols.
