Quick reference
IASSC Black Belt
The IASSC Black Belt certification is appropriate for a Lean Six Sigma project leader and coach in order to equip them to be a subject matter expert in Lean Six Sigma. The Black Belt Body of Knowledge is the list of topics and tools that a Black Belt practitioner should know.
When to use
When studying to take the IASSC Black Belt certification exam, this list should be your study guide.
Instructions
A Black Belt is a Lean Six Sigma subject matter expert. They are experts who are able to act as a project team leader and to coach and instruct others on the use of Lean Six Sigma tools and techniques. They may also be a subject matter expert in the product or process that is being improved. As the subject matter expert, they need to understand which tools are appropriate for each phase of the project. They should be able to apply the tools and techniques without coaching from others.
The Black Belt Body of Knowledge is the list of subjects that IASSC believes are necessary for Black Belt project leaders to know. They address all of the Lean Six Sigma project phases, that of Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. A thorough knowledge of these topics will prepare an individual to sit for the IASSC Black Belt Exam.
The Body of Knowledge list is divided into five parts for the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control phases. The topics are further divided into categories within those phases. There is some overlap between phases, so a topic introduced in one phase may have application in other phases – such as the concept of the normal curve, which is introduced in the Measure phase list and is applicable in all of the remaining phases.
IASSC does not provide a detailed explanation for each topic or even recommended references. They rely on the practitioner to acquire the information and background associated with each topic and the ability to apply the tools. The IASSC Black Belt Body of Knowledge is focused on the technical tools and techniques of Lean Six Sigma. To be an effective Black Belt in most organizations, the individual must also have or develop team leadership skills and project management skills.
Hints & tips
- The list of topics and tools is rather broad and different books or teaching programs may cover those topics differently. Be sure you are studying them in the context of a Lean Six Sigma project.
- There are many other aspects to a successful Lean Six Sigma project. These are focused on the Lean Six Sigma methodology. However, items like stakeholder support, project planning, and resource allocation are also key to project success.
- To be able to apply the tools and techniques, a solid understanding of mathematics and logic is needed. If you are weak in these areas, you should supplement your study with these topics.
