The Command Bar and Quick Commands
Use quick commands to execute common tasks in Teams.
When to use
We use quick commands whenever we want to improve our efficiency when working in Teams and execute common commands quickly.
Instructions
The search bar at the top is also commonly referred to as the command bar. We can use the command bar to trigger quick commands in Teams. Quick commands are shortcuts to common tasks.
For example, we could use a quick command to change our status from Available to Busy or jump to a specific channel. We could use a quick command to access our saved items.
Quick Commands
- Click in the search bar/command bar.
- Type /
This will show us the full list of quick commands available in Teams with a short description.
- Type or select from the list /available to change our status to Available.
- Type or select from the list /saved to jump to saved (bookmarked) items.
- Type or select from the list /goto Sales to jump to the Sales channel.
@ Commands
We can also use the @ symbol to jump to specific things quickly.
- Click in the search bar/command bar.
- Type the @ symbol.
We could select a team member from the list to send them a message. Alternatively, we could select one of the items listed below.
- Select @YouTube from the list.
We will be asked to add the YouTube app to Teams. Once complete, we can search for YouTube videos from within Teams and post them.
- Click in the search bar/command bar.
- Select @Praise
This will let us send praise to a specific team member.
Login to download- 00:03 In the previous lesson,
- 00:05 we saw how we can use the search box at the top of the screen to search for
- 00:10 different phrases and keywords across our teams channels, messages and files.
- 00:15 Now, the search box at the top is also referred to as the command box.
- 00:20 And using the command box, we can trigger something called Quick commands.
- 00:25 And quick commands are shortcuts for performing common tasks in teams.
- 00:30 For example,
- 00:31 you can use a quick command to update your status from available, to busy.
- 00:37 You could use a quick command to jump straight to a specific channel.
- 00:41 Or you could even use a quick command to quickly jump to your saved messages.
- 00:46 So, let's take a look at how they work.
- 00:48 Now to trigger a quick command or see the full list of quick commands available,
- 00:53 click your mouse in the search box and type a forward slash.
- 00:56 And this is going to show you all of the quick commands that you can use.
- 01:01 So if I want to quickly set my status to available, I can simply choose this quick
- 01:06 command from the list, or I can type in forward slash available.
- 01:10 Sometimes that's a little bit quicker.
- 01:12 If I want to call someone, I could type forward slash call.
- 01:15 Or maybe I want to jump directly to all of my saved items.
- 01:20 So let's take a look at a couple of these in action.
- 01:23 Currently take a note of my status it is set to available.
- 01:27 But if I want to make myself busy, I could simply choose forward slash busy.
- 01:32 And I now have a red dot over my name.
- 01:35 So it's a nice quick way of doing things.
- 01:38 Let's type in forward slash again, and
- 01:42 this time we're going to type in go to.
- 01:46 And you would use this if you want to jump directly to a specific team or channel.
- 01:51 So maybe I want to jump to the sales channel,
- 01:55 I can select it from the list, and there we go.
- 01:59 It's as easy as that.
- 02:01 Now one that I use fairly often is the one to jump me to my saved items.
- 02:06 As I said saved items is one of those things where I always forget where you
- 02:11 need to go in order to access them.
- 02:13 So a nice quick way of doing it is to simply type in forward slash saved,
- 02:19 And there are all of the messages that I've bookmarked or saved.
- 02:24 So quick commands, really useful.
- 02:27 There's another thing that you can type up here to pull up some additional options
- 02:31 as well.
- 02:32 If you type in the Add symbol into the command bar, I can choose to add
- 02:37 a specific person, or I have some other things that I can do down here.
- 02:42 For example if I want to search for a video on YouTube,
- 02:46 I could type in @YouTube, and it's going to ask me to add the YouTube
- 02:51 app into my teams, Which I'm very quickly going to do.
- 02:55 Now, take a look at what I have,I can enter in a search term.
- 02:59 So if I type in GoSkills, it's going to pull up a list of all of
- 03:04 the GoSkills YouTube videos, so a really nice little feature.
- 03:09 At Praise, well, this is going to allow me to send praise to a specific person.
- 03:15 So maybe they've done a really good job and I want to let them know,
- 03:19 I can choose the badge.
- 03:20 So, I want to say thank you, I can add a personalised note, and
- 03:24 then I can simply type in who I want to send this to.
- 03:28 So, let's say thank you to Jen for
- 03:30 completing that awesome presentation the other night.
- 03:34 Let's select and click on Send.
- 03:36 And you can see now in the chat that I'm having with Jen,
- 03:40 she's received that little badge.
- 03:42 So don't forget about those apt commands as well as those forward slash commands.
- 03:48 Really nice little shortcut ways of accessing popular teams commands
